Calligraphy on the walls
For the Salisbury Festival Mary Noble will be working with Chinese calligrapher Jianzhou Xu from Beijing, writing on the walls of Salisbury Arts Centre.
Working alongside each other, Mary will write Chinese proverbs in Western calligraphy, following a progression of scripts from Roman times to the present day, and Mr Jianzhou Xu will write English proverbs in a series of ancestral Chinese scripts.
The writing will happen on Friday 20th May and will remain on show for the duration of the Salisbury Festival (3 weeks).
Mary’s script trial for one proverb, 1 metre wide.

From Illustration to Painting
Anne Hayward and Joanna Williams at St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery
23rd April- 28th May
Illustrations and drawings, paintings and wood engravings
"From Illustration to Painting" represents the careers of two women artists, reflecting their continuing interest in the visual world. Anne and Joanna first met as young students at Southampton College of Art. Since the early 1960s they have pursued independent careers in painting, teaching and illustration but still strive to build on the aesthetic values they absorbed as students:they continue to share a belief in the expressive relationship between shapes and colours, tones and textures as well as the fundamental importance of drawing and honest interpretation.
